Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Title I
$500 million was appropriated for adult job training with priority given to "recipients of public assistance and other low-income individuals." These funds will primarily be distributed through area workforce investment boards. Action taken on the Senate floor authorizes the potential use of these monies for adult literacy and basic education, in conjunction with workforce training.
AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA
$200 million was approved for AmeriCorps programs, including $65 million for AmeriCorps VISTA. National service corps members address critical needs in communities all across America. The Florida Literacy Coalition has a AmeriCorps VISTA state grant, making available service corps members to community based literacy organizations.
