2005 Florida Literacy Conference
May 11-13

The Florida Mall Hotel
Orlando

Hundreds of adult and family literacy practitioners, tutors and adult learners will come together this May for the 21st Annual Florida Literacy Conference. Conferees will have their choice of over 70 workshops within ten learning tracks presented by local, state and national educators.

The festivities kick off on May 10th with a pre-Conference Paternal Literacy Celebration, sponsored by the Family Literacy Practitioners' Taskforce.

For our Opening General Session, we are pleased to welcome John Corcoran as our keynote speaker. Mr. Corcoran is a retired real estate developer and the author of The Teacher Who Could Not Read. Although he graduated from college and taught school for 17 years, Mr. Corcoran did not learn how to read until he was nearly fifty years old. He now devotes his time to adult literacy and has appeared on "20/20," ""Larry King Live," and "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

May 11th is Adult Learner Day in which students can attend the conference for free. For the first time, an adult learner committee is coordinating this event. Students won't want to miss it!

Join us May 12th for the Florida Literacy Awards Banquet. Mark McEwen, anchor of Central Florida's Local 6 First News and one of America's best known and best loved journalists, is the keynote speaker for this evening’s event. Awards will be given to outstanding programs, adult learners, volunteers, businesses and literacy leaders. Nominations are strongly encouraged by February 14 using the nomination form at www.floridaliteracy.org.

Tom Sticht, International Consultant in Adult Education, renowned researcher, writer and speaker in the field of adult education and literacy closes the Conference with "Literacy Frees the World: A Vision of the Future Through a Prism of the Past."

Thanks to the generous support of TechNet, two computer labs will be available for workshops and checking e-mail.
