Writing Webinar

Session Description: We know our learners have the “right stuff” to create compelling, personal narratives and many have the speaking skills required to make and support a claim. But can they acquire the skills that allow them to put their stories and ideas in writing? How can we best coach our learners so that they can take on the challenge of writing clearly and coherently? In this Webinar we’ll explore tools that help all our ESOL learners develop the pre-writing, drafting, and revising skills so critical to successful writing. Tools such as graphic organizers, checklists, models, frames, and rubrics do double duty: first as the basis for our direct, explicit and systematic writing instruction and then as the supports for learners when they write independently. We’ll also pay special attention to the role of the instructor’s feedback and provide tips to make the feedback process more manageable.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this Webinar you will be able to:
1) introduce and use graphic organizers and other pre-writing activities to help learners organize their ideas and focus on the writing topic,
2) use models, frames and checklists to help learners manage the drafting stage, and
3) incorporate rubrics, checklists, and/or correction codes as part of peer and instructor feedback at the revision stage.

Facilitator: Jayme Adelson-Goldstein has focused on adult ESOL curriculum development and teacher education for more than thirty years. Her workshops, Webinars and talks on ESOL instructional strategies have been well received inside and outside the U.S.  Jayme teaches an online adult methods course for TESOL and is part of a CCR Standards training project through CALPRO (the California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project). She is the author of several ESOL titles including The Oxford Picture Dictionary, The OPD Workplace Skills Builder Teacher Handbook as well as the EL/Civics Tool Kit for ACE of Florida.
